Following, in no particular order, are six reasons couples commonly break up.
- Finances. Financial issues are a main reason couples seek marriage counseling. Lack of money or a marked difference in how much each partner brings to the marriage can lead to power struggles, and deep problems in the relationship.
- Lack of intimacy. When a partner describes their relationship with their spouse like “roommates,” that lack of intimacy is a red flag. Intimacy doesn’t only mean physical; it means having a deep emotional connection as well. If the intimacy isn’t there, a relationship is likely in trouble.
- Infidelity: Extramarital affairs have led to the breakdown of many marriages. And with the popularity of smartphones, infidelity can take many forms—not only face-to-face, but online or via text.
- Constant bickering. Nonstop fighting is a relationship killer. Many divorcing couples tend to repeat the same arguments—money, kids, work, and chores. If spouses can’t see eye-to-eye on anything, divorce may be the only solution.
- Addiction. Addiction can alter a person’s priorities. Dependency on alcohol or drugs can put an entire family in danger and is typically the final straw in the decision to end a marriage.
- Marrying too young. Many couples divorce simply because they married young. When people are unprepared for the responsibilities of marriage, both emotional and financial, their marriage may not survive.
